What Is Sumplete?
Sumplete is a modern logic puzzle with one of the cleanest rule sets around: a grid full of numbers, and a target sum for every row and column. Some numbers must stay and some must be crossed out — and the kept numbers have to add up to each line's target exactly. The name spread as an "AI-invented puzzle" in 2023, but the format goes back decades in puzzle magazines, and it plays beautifully: part sudoku, part subset-sum.
How to Play Sumplete: Delete Numbers to Match the Sums
- Every number must either stay or be crossed out. Tap a number to cross it out; tap again to keep it.
- The numbers on the right show each row's target sum — the numbers you keep in that row must add up to it.
- The numbers along the bottom are the column targets — same rule, top to bottom.
- Targets turn green as their line matches. Make every line green to win.
Sumplete Strategy Tips
- Start with extreme targets. A row target equal to its full sum keeps every number; a target of 1 means keep the single 1 and cross out the rest.
- Work the forced lines first. Every decided cell changes two targets — rows and columns talk to each other, so progress cascades.
- Subtract to see what must go. In a row summing 45 with target 30, exactly 15 worth of numbers must be crossed out — look for combinations of the big numbers.
- Trust the math, not luck. Every Sumplete grid here has a unique solution, so there's always a logical reason for each cross-out.
Sumplete vs Sudoku
Both are grid logic puzzles with Latin-square roots, but sudoku is about placement — which digit goes where — while sumplete is about selection — which numbers survive the cut. Sudoku never does arithmetic; sumplete is nothing but arithmetic.
